Since being suddenly thrust into online music culture after the release of my first collection of songs last year, Mat Cothran has become one of the nearest and dearest people that I have had the pleasure of being introduced to because of this scene. His music and character prove to be two constants of inspiration and reassurance in my life, and being offered the chance to remix one of his songs was something I couldn’t turn down. Because of important place where Coma Cinema’s music sits in my life, trying to finish this project was nothing short of difficult, but after several false starts, I’m nervously content with where it now sits. Hope you enjoy it!

The artwork I used is a photo I took from the backseat of a car while touring Ontario with some friends earlier this year. I used the other half of the same photograph when designing the poster for the ongoing Coma Cinema tour.

Last night I finished a remix of a song called Aqua Net by one of my favourite bands, Raw Moans. I sampled a song from Twin Peaks (that happened to be in the exact same key but in a different time) and a Deerhunter song called Vox Humana for it. It's my first attempt at a remix.

As a personal celebration of the one year anniversary of the initial self-release of Swung from The Branches, I'm giving away this free pair of mostly instrumental songs that I recorded using a digital four track and my computer while recovering from a prolonged illness that affected me for about 5 weeks, lasting just up until a few days ago. I made these songs in an attempt to get back my energy, health and motivation back and to give something away to everyone who's been there to support Foxes in Fiction over the past year, I owe everything to you guys!

Foxes in Fiction - Alberto EP

These are 7 songs that I had been working on since about summer of this year, and would have finished a lot sooner had it not been for all the recording gear I had systematically break down on me over the course of the past six months (and not having the money to fix or replace it).

That being said, this EP is mostly an exercise in trying to focus on more structured forms of songwriting, trying to record alternate versions of some preexisting songs, incorporating a wider range of sounds into my recordings, and trying to not be so afraid of making my singing audible.

This EP is dedicated to and named after my friend Alberto who was the first person to invite me to New York to play some shows during the time his band Viernes was touring there. In return for his kind gesture, I told him I’m dedicate a release to him. A lot of the other songs on here were made with other people in mind, too.

About this song:

I wrote and recorded this is about one hour one morning last summer after spending a night out with some friends and realizing that I was living in and experience the happiest period of my life. The lyrics are about moving out of a prolonged period of depression and darkness and beginning to look at life in a more optimistic light.

I originally wrote this song with Mat Cothran under the name Coma Foxes. The original can be found here. The drum loop in the Foxes in Fiction version is recycled from a song called "Coffee Cups That Won't Break Down" off my album Swung from The Branches.

About this song:

This was the last song I recorded for this EP. The lyrics are about a middle-aged Iranian man that approached my friend Maya (Fifteen Ativan is about her) and I outside of the children's hospital near where I live and asked for $30 to take a bus to London, Ontario. The story he told me after asking for the money was that he, his daughter and his wife who had only been living in Canada for about a month had to be airlifted from London to the hospital in Toronto (about 2 hours away) after his 7 year-old daughter Sadiya had an accident that left part of her body paralyzed. Apparently after arriving in Toronto his wife's purse (with all their money and ID) had been misplaced or stolen and now he needed $30 to take a bus back to their home the next day. I said I would help him out and he started crying and kept showing me the picture of his daughter and telling me he would pray for me.

This was written and recorded in collaboration through e-mails with Alberto Daniel Hernandez, or Galleries, in two days during two separate sessions. The lyrics are about an incident I had getting detained by border guards while trying to cross the Canadian / US border to play a show in New York, and also about the geographical distances that separate Alberto and I from working together 'in real life'.

This is a rework of a song that's on my album Swung from The Branches. The lyrics were written on stage during an early Foxes in Fiction performance one day after hearing about a friend of mine who had allegedly overdosed on anti-anxiety medication the night before and called a friend to take her to the hospital. The lyrics are sort of an invented perspective / interpretation of that event. And no, she didn't die.

This song is based off a really early demo that I made in early 2009 after coming down with a really bad flu during the time that I applying for University. You can hear it here. The lyrics, which were written more recently, are about mental illness and the way negative things are amplified when someone is going through a mental breakdown. The clip at the very beginning is Mat Cothran of Coma Cinema freestyling in a phone message that he left for my friend Lance. I thought it'd be really funny to follow the only ambient track on this EP with freestyling. Ha.

I have a new EP called Alberto coming out on Orchid Tapes on the 20th of December. The EP is dedicated to my friend Alberto Hernandez who was the first person to invite me to New York to play shows during this band Viernes tour there. In return I told him I'd dedicate an EP to him. This is a really simple version of Along from the Three Songs for Ryan EP that could almost be a demo of the original (it’s not). I recorded it in about 20 minutes earlier tonight. I’ve been trying to strip down a lot of my songs to their core elements lately due to a potential video session I may be recording for La Blogotheque. This has kind of forced me to freak out and reexamine all my songs. Also, pardon the electrical clicks contained all over this recording; the mixer I use is sort of fucked up a keeps doing this to every single track that I record into Ableton. This one mishap (apart from me being broke) is pretty much the reason why my output has slowed lately. Regardless, enjoy!

Hello all,

I hope these first weeks of fall have been good for everyone. I feel like because I'm not enrolled in school this year, I have a chance to actually appreciate autumn with out any of the assignment/school anxiety that has messed with my head ever year for as long as I can remember. All things considered, I feel really happy with where I am with my balance of school and music and other things.

I've had a lot of devoted time to work on several different releases which should be seeing the light of day fairly soon. Those being two different EP's (entitled 'Alberto', and 'Sage') and a full length entitled 'Slow Evolution' (though I am considering changing the name). Also, the Coma Foxes project with I started with my good friend Mat Cothran has some other neat things in the works, too.

Also, for anyone in the area, I'm going to be playing two (free?) shows in New York City for CMJ Fest which I'm wildly excited about. They are as follows:

Wed Oct. 20th, 2010 @ Glasslands (11:30PM)
Thur October 21th, 2010 @ Piano's (3PM)

This is taken from an interview / mixtape I did for Warmer Climes.

"It's hard for me to consider my life without the music of Atlas Sound. I found out about Bradford Cox's body of work right around the period of my life where my family and I had just suffered the death of my 16 year-old brother Drew in April of 2008. After he was attacked at a party we were both at he suffered a head injury and went into a coma the day afterward for 10 days, before the hospital told us that oxygen had been cut off to his brain, and we made the choice to take him off life support.

I had never experienced anything to completely emotionally fucked up in my whole life, and to this day it's something that I still find myself having to deal with. When I first started listening to Atlas Sound around this period by chance, and started reading about Bradford Cox's own struggles with traumas in his own life, it provided to me a healing effecting that I had never experienced from music before. It's difficult to put into words but it's in the music. Reverb. Tremolo. Because of that I make an effort to encrypt a healing effect or something people can connect to in all of my own music. If there's any reason why the influence of Bradford Cox's music sometimes shines through my own, that's why. I'm not necessarily trying to emulate him in any way, I'm just still trying to find my own sounds and ways to make music that is really of myself."

Hey everyone. This song is a collaboration between my good friend Mat Cothran of Coma Cinema and myself (Foxes in Fiction), hence the name Coma Foxes. You should try saying it loud, it sounds really cool.

This is the first song is what is going to be something on an EP of collaborative songs between the two of us. We really hope you like it.

The artwork is a photograph of of a school in the neighbourhood where I grew up (Bronte in Oakville, Ontario) that stool for almost 90 years before it torn down in the 80s so a plaza could be built there.

The lyrics are about finding happiness and clarity after a long period of emotional chaos. The name of the song comes from a street in Toronto I walking down when the melody came to me. The artwork above is made from two photos I overlayed that I took with my cellphone.

Hey guys.

Aside from a few random things I haven't really produced many new recordings over the past few months. This is mostly due to the fact that the recording interface that I use broke down in April, and despite multiple attempts to have it repaired (and losing a lot of money in the process), it never worked out. During this time I recorded a lot of simple lo-fi acoustic based songs to my reel-to-reel tape machine that I got over my Christmas break and became almost completely knowledgeable of all it's properties and sound-manipulation possibilities.

I finally caved and spent an additional $300 on a new interface which finally came this week and once again opened up the world of digital recording to me, which is really fucking wonderful. I'm working on a something in between a full length and an EP called Slow Evolution which I'm trying to have done before August ends.

For now, here is a short three-song EP I recorded for my friend Ryan, which was kind of for the purpose of easing myself back into using computers to record (tape was also heavily employed on these songs). Hope you like it!

Foxes in Fiction - Lately (Memoryhouse cover)

I haven't really recorded anything new in a while because my recording interface is broken and has been giving me problems since like March. But, I thought I'd try to get around that by rewiring my whole set up and use my reel-to reel, SO last night I threw together a cover of Lately, a song by a band that I've really grown to love recently.

The lyrics in this song always seemed incredibly sad to me and made me think of someone who is trapped in a hospital bed, having machines do everything for them while slipping in and out of consciousness and then eventually coming to the decision that they want to die instead of living an artificial life like that.

There were a few new recording techniques I'd been dying to try out which I think turned out really well. I ended up bouncing some of the guitar tracks to and from my tape machine about three time. No samples. Hope you like it.

I have another collection of recordings coming out soon on Orchid Tapes that is still untitled, but it's gonna rawk ur sox when u hear it u guyz.

it looks like I won't be returning to OCAD University in the fall. I don't think I'm going to drop out, but instead just take a year off. This means I will have a lot more time to focus on two things:

1. Making and playing more music as Foxes in Fiction.

2. Releasing more music on Orchid Tapes.

This picture is just a snapshot of all the incredible times I had while doing the first Foxes in Fiction 'tour' to the US: Skyping with Ben of Trans-Bedroom Sound while sitting on Sunvisor’s rooftop drinking beers with my good friend Amanda at 4 AM in Long Island, New York, which really couldn't have been a greater way to wrap up the whole trip (with the exception of a coffee shop show and an extremely drunken night in Rochester, but that's another story) which brings me to this point:

Thanks for everyone (Jakub, Jeff, Sunvisor, Willy & Liz, Skipster, Viernes, Sara, Chaz, people who gave us directions in the street when we fucked up) who were so kind and hospitable to touring buddy Amanda and I while we were in the States. William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops

I've really been digging this album lately. This is the first part of four different album that quite a bit of patience when listening to but the entire product is incredible. Long flowing minimal ambient music that actually physically degrades over the course of the entire track coupled with a really cryptic back story:

"disintegration loop 1.1, william basinski, video,2001, 62 m. In the process of archiving and digitizing analog tape loops from work I had done in 1982, I discovered some wonderful sweeping pastoral pieces I had forgotten about. Beautiful, lush cinematic truly American pastoral landscapes swept before my ears and eyes. With excitement I began recording the first one to cd, mixing a new piece with a subtle random arpeggiated countermelody from the Voyetra. To my shock and surprise, I soon realized that the tape loop itself was disintegrating: as it played round and round, the iron oxide particles were gradually turning to dust and dropping into the tape machine, leaving bare plastic spots on the tape, and silence in these corresponding sections of the new recording. I had heard about this happening, and frankly was very afraid of this happening to me since so much of my early work was precariously near the end of its shelf life. Still, I had never actually seen it happen, yet here it was happening. The music was dying. I was recording the death of this sweeping melody. It was very emotional for me, and mystical as well. Tied up in these melodies were my youth, my paradise lost, the American pastoral landscape, all dying gently, gracefully, beautifully. Life and death were being recorded here as a whole: death as simply a part of life: a cosmic change, a transformation. When the disintegration was complete, the body was simply a little strip of clear plastic with a few clinging chords, the music had turned to dust and was scattered along the tape path in little piles and clumps. Yet the essence and memory of the life and death of this music had been saved: recorded to a new media, remembered. As far as Sept. 11th goes, perhaps you had to be here and see it with your own eyes and experience the horror and the ghastly smell, and smoke, sirens, no television or telephone, F-16s strafing the city at ear splitting volume, the fear, agony and deep sadness, see peoples faces in the subway, the deep longing bonded look people gave each other, the lip compression signifying compassion, to understand the magnitude of what we felt here. This was the end of the world...and we were literally sitting up on the roof all day and into night watching without believing as NYC burned, and listening to the heartbreaking Disintegration Loops...I thought...it's the soundtrack to the end of the world...I had been assigned the job without knowing the details, it was done, and here we are...The Greatest Show on Earth, Armageddon. We were all literally losing our minds in terror, each person looping onto what holds him or her together..clinging to that which could provide some kind of release or explanation..just as each of the individual melodies in the Disintegration Loops did...at their own pace, seeming to hold onto that which made the melody unique, while letting go of the unimportant sustains or gently adding rests incrementally before the downbeat...it really blew my mind. I hadn't really thought of trying to "achieve" anything. But perhaps, if the music enabled listeners to contemplate the temporal nature of life in this world and come to some small inkling or understanding as I did of a redemptive spirituality that animates us and continues on, then that would be an achievement."

Terrible show last night.

Last night I played a show at Cream Tangerine on Queen Street in Toronto and it was really bad. I sucked. For some reason I was already extremely nervous before the show which is a rare thing for me. I was kind of thrown off by the crappy sound quality of having to play my sampler through a little single PA speaker sitting on the floor. Then during my first song "Coffee Cups That Won't Break Down" as I was building up a swelling ambient intro out of some sweet-ass guitar loops, the power breaker blew just as I was about to go full force into the song. The tension of everything was destroyed in pop and then sudden silence. After about 20 minutes of hanging around in complete silence and listening to some really talented spoken-word artists who didn't let the night go to complete shit, I resumed my set only to have two cops come into the cafe and end the show due to a noise complaint (it was like 11 PM and some people from across the street couldn't deal with the atmosphere, man) and ended the set. I was sitting down and had my head down the entire time because of how nervous I was so I didn't even notice them come up. Pretty horrifying to look up and have two bitchy looking cops with their arms crossed staring at you. Sorry for anyone who had to witness that spectacle. I'm laughing about it now.

Hiiii everyone,

I think I'm losing my sense of articulation, every time I try and write a blog or an update my sentences start to look like mangled car wrecks and I defer to reading Hipster Runoff. Should have maybe taken summer courses. Should have read more books throughout the school year.

The CD reissue of Swung From The Branches on Moodgadget Records is going to be release on June 29th, I'll leave more details when they come. I listened to to the mastered version of it today, it's nice as hellll. There's going to be three new songs on it, too.

Also, my small-time-operations label Orchid Tapes is going to be releasing some material by some artists that I really love and am really excited about. Thankfully the reception I've received about the whole idea has been really positive so far, with lots of people willing to paticipate. I think I found a decent cassette duplicator service in Toronto that I'm gonna check out, so tapes as well as free downloads are gonna be a go! Check out the Orchid Tapes MySpace if y'all want to hear some of the artists.

Here's another springtime mix I threw together. I hope you like it. You are the perfect Drew.

My friends and family and I had a ceremony at a cemetery in Oakville this past Thursday to bury the ashes of my brother Drew with a new headstone that was just recently placed there. I was expecting the day to be beyond emotional, but it actually turned out really well, in whatever context. The rain stopped for exact amount of time we were at the cemetery and the sun even came out for a while, showing how beautiful a place like that has the potential to be. I got to see a bunch of old friends and reminisce with them and afterwards everyone came back to my Mom and my house to drink and stay as longmas they wanted. Not too bad at all. I created a new banner from a panorama of two pictures that my friend Amanda took that day.

Some other news from my life as of late; I 'officially' signed a contact with a Brooklyn electronic music label today called Moodgadget. I am really really excited about this. The guy I've been talking to from the label is a really rad guy and seems totally jazzed on what I've been working on. Apart from a slew of stuff coming out on Orchid Tapes soon, there'll be some work (an EP) coming out on Moodgadget in the near future, and a compact disk reissue of Swung from The Branches. Stay tuned, friends.

Also, my aforementioned friend Amanda and I had a chance to share some conversation with Ernest Greene of Washed Out last Wednesday after his set at Wrongbar. Kindest guy ever, it was a great night. s000 chill.

my friends Mike, Alex and I got together to hang out for the day, in that time I took some photos using my Canon T70 and some Kodak 400 film that I thought turned out really nice and had a fairly uniform feel throughout all of them. I thought I'd share them with you. I hope you like them.

I just got a new Yashica camera earlier this week that I'm hoping I can take out for some kind of fun photo expedition sometime soon and reignite my interest in film photography. I miss the days of being able to develop my photos for free.

I've been kind of intentionally slacking on posting these as of late due to the feeling that I was flooding the blog with endless mixes, so this one's been a few months in the making. I am going to start labeling them numerically from now on. A lot of the songs on it were off albums I listen to pretty heavily while writing and recording Swung from The Branches. Update / track explaination

First off, I would like to thank everyone for listening to my album, sharing with other people and giving me feedback. In the past couple of weeks I have seen it get close to 900 downloads, be shared on several great blogs and explode as a semi-viral force on 4chan, which is absolutely disillusioning and amazing to me and I’m still trying to wrap my head around the success Swung from The Branches has seen.

For those who care, I’m going to make some physical copies of the album available for sale from here and the myspace page in a few days, I just need to find a new tape deck to dub the cassettes that I have, as the one I have now is in really rough shape and has been producing shit quality tapes. No good. They’re probably going to be about five bucks.

Also, as I promised in an early post, I’ve written out the explanations and lyrics for each one of the tracks on Swung from The Branches for those who are interested. I don’t usually spend much time of encoding the meaning of a song through lyrics or on actually writing the words but instead through the tone and music used, but it all kind of ties in together in the end. I also usually really like reading about the authors intent and ideas about songs, so yeah, here it goes:

The album was recorded using Ableton 7 and 8 and a 4-track Akai reel to reel. The basis for all of the music on Side A of the was created in about three nights using only a guitar, a looping pedal and a sampler. The only synthesizer that was used was on the bass notes in ‘Coffee Cups’, the bells in ‘Ninth Floor’ and the obvious room-recorded microkorg in ‘8 / 29 / 91’. The album cover is from a photo I found while working in a photolab that was taken in 1943, according to the date written on the back.

"Operating Room" was salvaged from an old guitar loop I recorded in early December 2009. I named it what I did because it reminded me of the sounds, sterility, air of life and death and my own experiences in hospitals. As an intro track, I thought it set the mood of the album appropriately.

"Basement Window" was recorded at the same time as most of the tracks on Side A. I tried to capture the feeling of being in my old basement in the suburbs and looking outside though a small window after being up all night with friends after having taken ecstasy and having the world seem altered and anxiety provoking, and having to work up the will to either try and sleep or go outside and face the world.

I made "Sleeping Building Unsuspecting" in an attempt to capture the idea of feeling like the only one awake in my apartment building at 4:30 AM, and being totally isolated.

The lyrics for "Coffee Cups that Won’t Break Down" were written while biking through Bronte in Oakville one night on a notepad that I had:

Is he wondering, you’ve been waiting
Knee deep water, he’s the red one
You’ve been waiting

They're about being in the middle of obsessive unrequited love and knowing your feeling won’t be returned and that they’re destructive but in knowing that, your attraction grows. The ending of the song suggests becoming free of those feelings.

The song it segways into ‘Ninth Floor View’ is what it is; a brief meditation on what I see from my window at night. “Cream Screen” contains a sample of an ice-cream truck I recorded from my from porch in Oakville.

“8 / 29 / 91” contains a sample of Charles Bukowski reading a journal entry that I found in a video on YouTube. In the final stages of mixing the album this song took on a more significant personal meaning when I realized the date he reads at the beginning (August 29th, 1991) is the exact date of my younger brother Drews' birth, who died in April of 2008. The majority of my body of work is directly inspired by his life and the events surrounding his death.

“Mialectric” contains a bunch of samples recorded to a cassette deck on Yonge St. in Toronto and at my friend Mias house. The guitar was recorded at my cottage on New Years eve. The music is intended to represent the feeling of an impending panic attack or mounting anxiety a public place, and the collapse of rational thought.

“Bronte Balloons” was written about the feeling of spending my days and nights on the streets in the neighbourhood near my house when I was 16 or 17 and how I began to notice my perception of and feelings towards familiar things around me changing, being unsure if it was because of my drug use at that time or if it was a normal part of getting older.

“New Panic Cure” is an alternate version of an older song called “Panic Cure Dub” which was written about a series of inside jokes made up the first time I met my friend Tyson regarding emotional issues. Five of us were sitting in my bed after having spent the whole night partying at my house together and he said something along the lines of “I would really like a manicure”, and I said “I would really like a panic cure”. Hilarity ensued and I promised I would write a song called Panic Cure. My bed frame broke about 5 minutes later. The original version contains cut up samples of a song he and I improvised and recorded together.

“Jimi Bleachball” was written and recorded for a video project I had to do for one of my classes at OCAD. I shot the video first and then got a feel for what would fit well with it, then recorded the song. The lyrics around about a summer I had in 2006 that I shared with three close friends that changed my life. I think everyone’s kind of got a summer like that.

I saw my best friend counting his heartbeat
I saw the best days wasted on sleeping in

Try hard to feel it, mind has now wandered
Hands meant to hold hands, kept from the cold, I don't know

Kids riding two lives, swung from the branches
Kept in our backyards, soon to be sunsets
Oh summer blister, smoking in the van
Go down together, the pavement we've conquered

The majority of “Please Note” was recorded using an Akai reel to reel tape machine and vocal samples for the synthesizer patch and some other experimental production techniques that I wanted to try out. Was largely inspired by Broadcast which I was listening to a lot of at the time of recording this album. The sample in the middle is a clip of a man named Clive Wearing speaking, who only has a short term memory capacity of 30 seconds, and the worst case of amnesia ever known.

“Snow Angels” was hugely inspired by Angelo Badalamenti’s original music in the television show Twin Peaks, which I got the DVD box set for for Christmas from my Mom. It’s meant to kind of be a cheesy slow dance pop song. The lyrics are about friendship, and the effects of winter on my state of mind.

Cut down attention span, winter is overtaking me

And it gave to another holiday

The music for “15 Ativan (Song for Erika)” was written in early 2009 for my friend Erika Altosaar and is based on the opening two chords of “Femme Fatale” by the Velvet Underground. The lyrics were written on stage during an early Foxes in Fiction performance one day after hearing about a friend of mine who had overdosed on anti-anxiety medication the night before and called a friend to take her to the hospital. The lyrics are sort of an invented perspective / interpretation of that event.

“To Go Home” was written about a news story I read about children in Haiti being abducted and sold as slaves or sex trade workers after the earthquake.

“Memory Pools” is about an afternoon I spent with some close friends during Fall of 2007.

“Insomnia Keys” is an instrumental song I wrote after being up all night with restless insomnia. I didn’t really have anything in mind when recording it. I included a recording of the street below my window in it.

“Visiting Hours” is made from a different recording of the same guitar used in the first track "Operating Room". I used it to kind of bring the album around full-circle, and stay within the theme of life and death in hospitals.

Jimi Bleachball / A.E "Faders" 4chan mess

While I was reading some stuff on the Deerhunter forum today, I came across a video from someone who had taken one of my songs and resposted it as a song called 'Faders', under the name A.E.

Whoever they were posted that and New Panic Cure as YouTube videos onto 4chan / various blogs where it began to make the rounds. The videos are gone now but the mp3 that's posted there is a double low quality version of my song, Jimi Bleachball, which someone ripped from the music video that I made. You can even hear the click of the tape machine that's at the end of the video.

Even the artwork that was made is a weird homage to Logos:

EDIT: I got two emails from the blog I Guess I'm Floating after contacting them a short while ago, which seems to have put an end to this hilarious situation:

"Hey Warren --

I actually just got to the bottom of this a second ago. Apparently it was some inside joke between a few friends and I stumbled upon the tracks from a tip I received earlier this week. It was totally mysterious to me so I posted the video/song hoping a reader could point me in a good direction.

Needless to say, it doesn't change the fact that I absolutely love the two songs I've heard - "Jimi Beachball" and "New Panic Cure". I've deleted the post with A.E. and would much rather do a proper write-up with YOUR actual music and info included..."

I received another email earlier from a guy named Taylor who's a poster on 4chan giving an explanation in deeper detail:

Not sure if you're aware of this already, but the source of this whole "A.E. - Faders" thing is mostly coming from the 4chan board /mu/. If I remember correctly, someone there crafted the original picture. No one ever fessed up though, so I guess it's just a rumor.

Man, did you get some hardcore praise. Supposedly "A.E." was some ultra-secret project of Bradford Cox, or it was the music of the future, or that Pitchfork already rated the so-called Faders album a 10/10, but it hadn't been released yet. So I guess in a way, you're famous. Just under a different name.

I already posted some long explanation on /mu/ explaining that A.E. was fake, that Foxes in Fiction was the real artist, etc. etc., and I posted a link for your album and MySpace and whatnot. Good music."

This is a silent film of me on St. Patrick's Day '06 the second time I ever drank alcohol in my life, hosting an imaginary cooking show involving apples and Pilsbury toaster strudels. I think I was having a difficult but altogether 'mindblowing' time. I later fell down some stairs while listening to Led Zeppelins' "Friends". I found the video with the little 'urmomclearly', I can't argue with that.

Note: I am having a record release party on the 26th of March at the Bread and Circus in Toronto. Any one in the general area should make a concerted effort to make it out as there are going to be a lot of really mind-blowingingly good bands who will fuck your brains and completely disorient you with their giant musical 'extensions'. I fully intend to have another album recorded in time for this show that will be given away free on a CD for those who purchase a cassette copy of 'Swung from The Branches' for $5. Hey guys, my mind is gone, but here is the download for the new mixtape album I've been putting together over the course of the past three months or so. The title was taken from a lyric in the song 'Jimi Bleachball'.

The whole thing was recorded for a kind of cassette A Side / B Side format so there is a pretty obvious division in style between the two. The first flows kind of as one long dreamlike hallucination song that segways pretty easily into each track, and is meant to inspire some pretty specific moods, while the second side more lucid pop songs. A big inspiration in making a lot of these songs was short-tracked hip hop albums like J Dillas' 'Donuts'. I don't know how obvious this is. It wasn't even really supposed to have an 'album' feel but it just sort of turned out that way, even two albums?, though I'm hoping it kind of has something for everyone.

Most of these songs are tracks that arose from restlessness, breaks between classes, insomnia and 5 AM isolation while in my in my apartment in Toronto. A couple of them are reworkings of old tracks that most of you guys probably have never heard but I felt would be fitting on this release. In the new few days I'm gonna post the lyrics and some detailed explanations into the meaning behind some of these tracks, cause who doesn't love to know? Hope you enjoy it. xoxo

A video I made for a class at OCAD that I finished editing this morning. The song I used is on the album / mixtape that I'm going to be posting tomorrow. Lots of the footage I used was originally shot straight to VHS using a really old camcorder than my Dad gave my years ago, then played on a television screen and filed with a digital camcorder. The result is a pretty nostalgic mix of imagery and saturated colours in a (what I think to be) washed out Super 8 style. I hope you find something in it that you like.

That's right; 2002! I wish I had more of these animations. Since I lived in a farm town and didn't really have anyone to socialize with at the time I started making little GIF animations to occupy my restless mind. I originally had over 100 but I lost most of them when my computer crashed a few years ago. I remember for an assignment in grade 7 or 8 our teacher told us to write a set of instructions for anything we wanted, and I did mine on making basic animations, and eventually everyone in the class wanted a copy and was soon making animations 5 times as ultraviolent and crude as mine.

When I was 13 my Dad enrolled me in 'film camp' because I once had huge affinity for making weird James Bond inspired home movies on the giant cassette tape recorder my Dad owned that starred all the kids from my neighbourhood in Mississauga. (If I can figure out how to rip those I'll post them someday) Anyways, the result of FILM CAMP is as follows. We all took like 2 or 3 days to establish a 'plot' and the rest of the two weeks was spent filming and all that fun shit. It's incredibly lame but whenever I get drunk enough I put the DVD on to show everyone at my house during parties. Jeeeuhh.

Geeshie Wiley - Last Kind Words

Incredible song with magical guitar playing. I first discovered Geeshie Wiley through a link on the White Stripes forum around 2003 and was one of the first blues musicians that I really developed an affinity for. Well worth investigating.
From Wikipedia:

"Geeshie Wiley (sometimes rendered as Geechie Wiley) was an obscure female United States blues singer and guitar player. She recorded three disc records in the early 1930s, all now highly sought after and worth a fortune to 78 record collectors. There are no known photographs or images of the artist in existence.

Ishman Bracey (whose testimony may or may not be accurate) said that Wiley was from Natchez, Mississippi or nearby, and at one time or another romantically linked to Papa Charlie McCoy. She is rumored to have worked in a medicine show in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1920s. Wiley may have been married to Casey Bill Weldon for a time, following his divorce from Memphis Minnie.

Wiley recorded "Last Kind Word Blues" and "Skinny Leg Blues" in Grafton, Wisconsin for Paramount Records in March of 1930, with Elvie Thomas backing her on second guitar. (Thomas also recorded two songs for Paramount at the session, "Motherless Child Blues" and "Over to My House," with someone, presumably Wiley, providing second guitar and vocal harmonies.) In 1931 Wiley and Thomas returned to Grafton to record two more sides for Paramount, "Pick Poor Robin Clean" and "Eagles on a Half."

Happy new year! I've been pretty lack on my blog posts lately, sorry about that. I'm trying to get back into a regular routine of writing, on and off the blog. I might do a set of new years resolutions. I do a list up every year and try and follow them as well as I can. I think this year went pretty well, though I don't remember what exactly I put on my list. Probably whine less and sing more or some sort of ambiguous creative thing. If I can actually find it I'll scan it and post it here.

So I've got one more week left of my break before I have to get back to school and do the art grind again, I don't know how much I'm looking forward to it. Maybe four weeks off was too much, I'm used to staying up until 5 30 in the morning and waking up as the sun begins to set. What the fuck am I doing with my life? lol!

Lots of things in the coming days. My friend Danny (Glow Worm) and I are almost done a split with a bunch of pop songs on them, antithetical to the one I did with De Rol Le' which was largely ambient. Speaking of which, the new cassette tape project I've been more or less slaving over will be done in a day or two as well. If anyone wants a copy just let me know and I'd be glad to send you a copy. There will of course be a digital download as well but who the fuck wants to do that boring shit? That's right, no one.

I'll post another micromix in a few days. I'm thinking of not doing them monthly anymore, as I'm running out of ideas for songs to add to them that aren't repeats and aren't boring and no one's really been downloading them at all lately. Fuckers. I think I'm just gonna do them whenever the inspiration hits me and do more specific themes or something. I don't know, the whole monthly thing is meh.
